The Foxes in Snow Beanie combines warmth and whimsy with a pattern inspired by the gray foxes that roam the Southeastern Woodlands. Made with double-stranded yarn, this thick, slouchy hat is both stylish and practical, with a subtle motif that recalls a wintery woodland scene. If you’re looking for a quick knit with beautiful results, this pattern is perfect.
Supplies Needed:
- Knitting Needles: 9mm 16” circular needles (US Size 13) (get the 31″ needles if you want to try magic loop!)
- Yarn: Two skeins of size 5 yarn in cream and charcoal (I used Hobby Lobby’s “I Love This Chunky” yarn)
- Notions: Stitch marker, yarn needle, and scissors
Knitting Terminology
- C/O – Cast On
- B/O – Bind Off
- K1, P1 – Knit one stitch, purl the next (used to create ribbing)
- K across – Knit stitches for the entirety of the row
Method: Foxes in Snow Beanie Pattern
Tip for Joining in the Round: After casting on, slip your last made stitch onto your right-hand needle. Then, take the first stitch you made and slip it from the right needle to the left, crossing the stitches to create a smooth join with no gap.
Ribbing:
- Cast On: Cast on 50 stitches in your base color (cream).
- Join in the Round: Slip a stitch marker onto your right needle to mark the beginning of the round.
- Rows 1-14: K1, P1 across each row for a ribbed brim. (Feel free to adjust to your preference: for a slouchy look, knit 12-14 rows; for a shorter brim, adjust accordingly.)
Body of the Hat:
- Rows 1-2: Begin by knitting 5 stitches in cream, then K1 in charcoal. Repeat K5 in cream, K1 in charcoal until you’ve added 9 charcoal stitches around. (You may move into Row 2 before completing all charcoal stitches.)
- Row 3 and Beyond: Repeat the sequence K5 in cream, K1 in charcoal around, until you’ve reached the desired length of the beanie (12” to 18” for a typical slouchy hat).
Note: Once you’ve established the pattern, you won’t need to count—each “fox face” of charcoal stitches is naturally framed by two stitches of cream on either side:
Finishing the Beanie
Binding Off: For a seamless bind-off, try the following method:
- Pull your right-hand needle out, leaving your stitches on the left needle.
- Cut the yarn, leaving a 12” tail.
- Thread the yarn needle with the tail and pass it through each stitch on the left needle.
- Once all stitches are on the yarn, pull it tightly to close the top of the hat. Thread the yarn needle through the center of the hat to the inside, turn the hat inside out, and weave in the ends.
